Big Talbot Island State Park

Big Talbot Island State Park

This special place holds the key to relaxation. Miles and miles from any cell phone tower, your phone will be message free for as long as you like.

As soon as you pull up to park, you’re greeted by a winding trail through the woods. The cicadas will ring loud in your ears as you walk. Every once in a while, you’ll see a butterfly flutter past you and soon the sound of the waves will reveal themselves.

In order to move from trail to beach, one must do a little dance with the trees, over and then under. A giant fallen tree now blocks the entrance, but it sure is a fun adventure just to touch the sand.

Once you’ve made it onto the beach, it feels like you’ve entered a magical graveyard. Enormous fallen trees scatter the beach, their height towers over you. Whenever you’re standing next to one, it has this strange, but intriguing, power to make you feel very small and insignificant. That feeling may turn off some people, however it really puts the things you do in perspective. Those trees are upwards of hundreds of years old and a good dose of reality is good for the soul.

This spot isn’t as secret as it needs to be sometimes. On weekends, there are families with their children or couples taking lovely strolls. But sometimes, if you’re really lucky, you’ll get those days when it’s deserted. Its very rare and eerie, but an incredible experience. If you have an ENO hammock, it’s the perfect spot to hang on a tree, or even set up a tranquil spot in the man made Tee-Pee around the bend. Either way, this spot is one of the best spots in the world to not get cell reception.
