Fort Clinch State Park
Fort Clinch State Park
Fort Clinch State Park is a magnificent yet mysterious place.
It captures you’re attention and arouses your curiosity, eventually you’ll
forget all about your phone and the fact there isn’t a phone signal for miles.
Once a safe
haven for confederate troops in the Civil War, Fort Clinch is now an abandoned
monument for families to come see it’s historic past. Park employees are dressed up as confederate
soldiers as they welcome you to the year 1864. The winding road that leads
through the park is a beautiful sight covered in Spanish moss. Friendly
cyclists ride right past you and signs for RV and Tent camping pass as you
drive in. Once you pull up to the fort, one experiences a wave of chills.
There’s a lot of energy surrounding the buildings, some calm and some
terrifying.
Upon
exploring this eerie fort, if you stumble upon an underground tunnel behind the
prison building, enter carefully. Rumor has it that halfway down the tunnel
something extremely violent happened there and the energy still remains. When I
personally visited the tunnel, I walked halfway down while holding the hand of
one of my best friends. The energy is real and it gives you a rush of
adrenaline.
If a haunted
tunnel is not your thing, just steps away from the chilling history of the
Civil War, lays a relaxing and picturesque beach. There’s rolling sand dunes
for miles and miles and the tall fort lay undisturbed in the background. Right
around late afternoon is the best time to visit the beach. When the sun is in
starting to go down, nothing beats the sound of seagulls and the cool breeze of
the ocean. Bring a beach chair, a drink of your choice, and watch the sailboats
come in and out of Cumberland Sound. It’s quite a relaxing and perfect way to
end a busy workweek. Who knows, you may even find a shark tooth right at your
feet.
